About EHEC

EHEC (Entero-Haemorrhagic Escherichia coli) is a pathogen present in cattle with major risk of contamination in meat , dairy and produce.

It causes serious illnesses in consumers (hemorraghic colistis, hemolytic-uremic syndrome). Pathogenic / Diarrhoegenic  E.coli (DEC) are categorized into 6 pathotypes according to the clinical evidences and expressed virulence factors:
-              STEC (Shiga toxin producing E.coli) or VTEC or EHEC
-              ETEC (Enterotoxigenic E.coli)
-              EPEC (Enteropathogenic E.coli)
-              EAEC (Enteroaggregative E.coli)
-              EIEC (Enteroinvasive E.coli)
-              DAEC (Diffusely adherent E.coli)
STEC and Verocytotoxic E. coli (VTEC) are synonymous. Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) are a sub-group of them.
2 reference methods are available: USDA-MLG 5B & ISO TS 1336. But still too many false alarms and a complex protocol.
