Milwaukee, WI – Accelerated Analytical Laboratories, a full-service contract cGMP-testing laboratory, is proud to announce that the lab has achieved faster and more reliable test results thanks to its recent acquisition of the bioMérieux GENE-UP Real Time PCR system for Pathogen detection in food products. Accelerated Analytical replaced a previous isothermal DNA amplification platform with the GENE-UP Real Time PCR system to improve the accuracy of results, the speed of testing and to help its clients protect the families who consume their favorite brands of produce, dairy, meats, and other foodstuffs.
Product safety and quality assurance are the most important issues facing the modern food marketplace. As more and more food products are prepacked and ready to consume, food companies—including those with major brand names—can see their reputations evaporate if they violate the trust of their customers by releasing contaminated products. Food makers are keenly aware of advances in food safety testing and won’t hesitate to acquire cutting-edge technology that provides better and faster results in order to minimize the release of food lots that may be contaminated.

Detecting food pathogens—particularly Salmonella and Listeria — is of paramount importance to food makers because of the grave dangers these pathogens hold. Nearly 150,000 Americans suffered with foodborne Salmonella infections in 2010, which led to 30 deaths, according to the CDC. And in 2002, a single Listeria outbreak caused by contaminated deli meat impacted 54 people, 8 of whom died including 3 pregnant women.
“With GENE-UP, we find the process to be quicker – both hands-on time and system run time – which translates to reporting negative results to our customers sooner. In turn, this results in them being able to release their products to the market more rapidly. The faster turn-around time is crucial for us and vital to our customers.”
In the last 5 years, there have been unprecedented advancements in innovative detection systems, particularly in DNA-based testing. Once very costly and slow, these new systems are rapid and require minimal skill to operate. The GENE-UP is considered by many in the industry to be the very best.
“But speed isn’t the only benefit to the GENE-UP platform,” Metzger added. “Accuracy is paramount and GENE-UP provides superior accuracy. With our previous isothermal DNA amplification platform we had issues with enzyme samples being flagged as presumptive positives for Salmonella. After further investigation it was discovered that the results were truly negative, but an interference issue with enzymes on our previous isothermal DNA amplification platform caused a false positive result. In the food safety industry, we can’t allow this kind of imprecision. With GENE-UP, we had none of this interference with enzyme samples and the internal control in every well assures us that a negative result is a true negative and there is no matrix inhibition or interference.”
Real-Time PCR Solution for Pathogen Detection
With GENE-UP, molecular pathogen detection has never been simpler, faster or more flexible. GENE-UP offers ease of use, an intuitive interface, internal controls in every test, as well as AOAC Performance Tested Methods℠ certification from the AOAC Research Institute (AOAC-RI) for Salmonella, Listeria spp., Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli O157:H7 and STEC (Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli).
The GENE-UP is also unique in that it provides an open platform for maximum flexibility to perform ceeramTOOLS kits for the detection of virus & parasites, including Norovirus GI, Norovirus GII, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis E.
GENE-UP test kits are available for: Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, Listeria spp., Listeria monocytogenes, and EHEC (Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli) Top 6 serotypes with more kits in the pipeline.
The GENE-UP software can be installed in any PC so there is no added cost for a proprietary monitor. This frees lab technicians from having to be at the bench to setup the plate map and to check results, which can be accessed remotely. The software can be connected to your labs existing Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
